You can use any wool fabric like a coat or a sweater to make these felt balls. If the wool fabric has a print it will blend slightly and have a slightly fuzzier look.

I found out during my process that my fabric wasn’t 100% wool or it had been treated with something so it didn’t felt up as nicely as other wool fabric I’ve used in the past. This is wool fabric I had leftover from making this amazing wool coat, and I wanted to make use of the scraps!

I’m going to hang this felt ball garland over our felt stockings! I just love garlands and banners hanging on my mantle.

Another way I have made felt balls is by wrapping wool yarn into a ball and using this same method in the washing machine. I made some dryer balls and I’ve loved using them. The yarn impressions never fully go away, but it is a nice way to use up yarn.

Watch the video and then read the tutorial below.

1. Use the cup to cut a bunch of circles out of the wool fabric. My circles are about 2 inches in diameter.

2. Save all the scraps of wool fabric, and you might need to even cut some more.

3. Sew a basting stitch around each circle. You can use a sewing machine or you can use and hand needle and thread.

4. Pull the basting stitch to gather the fabric into a ball. Before pulling it too tight stuff some of the wool fabric scraps in the middle.

5. Pull the basting stitch tight and then tie the basting stitches in a square know.

8. Throw the sock in a very hot load of wash. Dry it on hot. Wash it again and dry it again. It’s important that it goes through a lot of heat and agitation to turn the wool fabric into felt.

9. Cut the yarn pieces off and carefully pull out each felt ball.

10. Cut any remaining threads from the basting stitches. I was not able to pull out my basting stitches because they had been felted in, but I could trim the thread tails poking out.

11. Thread the felt balls on string, yarn, or embroidery floss with a big needle to turn it into a garland.
