Summer is coming, and it’s time to think about swimsuits! I love sewing swimsuits for both boys and girls. I’ve already shared tips for sewing stretchy swimsuit fabric, but today I’m sharing how to make a boy’s swimsuit using two Simplicity patterns and the Cricut Maker*.

This was the first in-depth sewing project I used with the Cricut Maker*. As I was preparing my fabric to cut out, I wondered if the Maker would actually make my project faster. It was taking me awhile to cut the fabric just to fit on the mat.

Once I started watching the Maker cut out the pieces, I loved that it cut my fabric pieces, it marked my fabric, AND the notches were cut more accurately than any other project I’ve ever cut out. I loved not cutting out a pattern and not pinning it to fabric. And I really love that the hem was marked.

My favorite part was that I placed one piece of fabric on the mat wrong, so that the piece was cut incorrectly. Instead of placing the pattern piece somewhere else and pinning it again, I just had the Cricut Maker* cut that mat and pattern piece again. It was amazing and so fast to fix my mistake!

I used two Simplicity sewing patterns on Cricut Design Space to create this boy’s swimsuit. I used the Boy’s Boxer Shorts and baby Vintage bloomers.

The changes I made to the shorts were to use swim fabric instead of cotton. I also omitted the fly opening on the shorts.

The changes I made to the bloomers were to use stretchy swimsuit lining. I omitted the elastic at the legs since it fits like stretchy underwear on my boy. I also shortened the height of the bloomers so that they would fit inside the shorts. How to Make a Boy's Swimsuit with Simplicity + the Cricut Maker // heatherhandmade.com

I have had a boy for over six years which means I’ve been looking for boardshort fabric for over six years. There are not a lot of options!

The two places I have found that have boardshort fabric is The Fabric Fairy and Raspberry Creek Fabrics. Both have their own styles, but they are both good quality. It mostly depends on the pattern and color you are looking for!

SUPPLIES

Before you get started and gather all your supplies check sizing and measurements on the pattern to make sure it will fit your child. The boxer shorts pattern provided a hips measurement, a side length measurement, and a leg circumference measurement. I measure my son and it was a great fit for him.How to Make a Boy's Swimsuit with Simplicity + the Cricut Maker // heatherhandmade.com

  1. After measuring to make sure the pattern will fit, prepare the pieces of fabric by cutting them to the size recommended in the instructions.
  2. Set up your Cricut Maker* with your phone or computer. Place the first piece of fabric face down on the 12×24 fabric cutting mat. It’s really important that the fabric is face down so that the fabric pen writes on the wrong side of the fabric! How to Make a Boy's Swimsuit with Simplicity + the Cricut Maker // heatherhandmade.com
  3. Use the Cricut Maker* to cut out all the pieces. You should have two waistband pieces, two fronts, two backs, and two lining pieces. How to Make a Boy's Swimsuit with Simplicity + the Cricut Maker // heatherhandmade.com
  4. With right sides together and a straight stitch sew the inseams of the front and back pieces together. Finish the edges.
  5. With right sides together and a straight stitch sew the crotch seam. Instead of following the pattern to have a fly opening, I created a faux fly by following the outside of the fabric. Finish the edges. How to Make a Boy's Swimsuit with Simplicity + the Cricut Maker // heatherhandmade.com
  6. Use the markings to see where the center comes together to create the faux fly.
  7. Baste the fold at the top.How to Make a Boy's Swimsuit with Simplicity + the Cricut Maker // heatherhandmade.com
  8. With right sides together and a straight stitch sew the side seams of the shorts. Finish the edges.
  9. Finish the edge of the leg openings. Use the hem marking to fold the hem up and sew it.How to Make a Boy's Swimsuit with Simplicity + the Cricut Maker // heatherhandmade.com
  10. With right sides together and a zigzag stitch sew the two front seams of the swimsuit lining. How to Make a Boy's Swimsuit with Simplicity + the Cricut Maker // heatherhandmade.com
  11. With right sides together and a zigzag stitch sew the crotch seam together.
  12. Fold the leg openings up 3/8″ and sew around with a zigzag. This is the leg hem with no elastic added. How to Make a Boy's Swimsuit with Simplicity + the Cricut Maker // heatherhandmade.com
  13. I found that the swimsuit lining was just a tad tall, so I cut 1″ off the top of the swimsuit lining at the waist.
  14. Place the swimsuit lining inside the shorts with wrong side of the lining facing the wrong side of the shorts. Match up the center front and center back and pin all the way around. How to Make a Boy's Swimsuit with Simplicity + the Cricut Maker // heatherhandmade.com
  15. Sew the side seams of the waistband.
  16. Fold the waistband in half lengthwise with wrong sides together. Match up the notches and center front and center back. You will have four layers together: two layers of waistband, the lining, and the shorts.
  17. Sew the waistband on the shorts with a straight stitch. Leave a 3 inch gap to insert elastic. How to Make a Boy's Swimsuit with Simplicity + the Cricut Maker // heatherhandmade.com
  18. Cut the elastic the right length by measuring it on your child. Use a safety pin to insert the elastic into the waistband like a casing.
  19. Sew the elastic ends together and then sew the gap closed.
  20. Carefully press your seams with a cool iron.
