I thrifted this simple black dress for this refashion because I didn’t have a solid colored dress in my closet that would work. You can thrift a dress or use a dress you already have in your closet.

I would recommend a solid color or a subtle pattern so that the fringe can be the focal point. The fringe trim would look good on lots of different silhouettes. Choose the silhouette you are most comfortable in.

The secret to this refashion is that the color of fringe should match or nicely contrast with the color of the dress. You want the fringe to look like it came with the dress instead of being added later. I chose black and black because they would be the easy to match. You could also do navy and navy, white and white, gold on tan, or silver on gray.

When choosing fringe you need to match the qualities of the fringe to the dress. If the dress does not stretch then you should use a non-stretch dress. If your dress does stretch then you should use a stretch fringe.

How to Sew Fringe on a Dress

Watch the video and then read the tutorial below.

1. Decide if you want the fringe to hang past the hem. I chose to have my fringe line up with the hem of the dress. Pin the fringe around the circumference of the dress.

2. Sew the fringe to the dress. If you are working with stretch than use a zigzag stitch. If you are working with non-stretch than use a straight stitch.

3. When the two raw edges of the fringe trim meet have one overlap the other by 1/2 inch and backstitch a couple of times to secure.

4. Sew on another row of fringe trim and overlap the row below by half. Remember to overlap the raw edges.

6. Add as many rows of fringe as you want. I added four rows of fringe. It takes about 1-1.5 yards per row depending on the shape of your dress.
