I’m bringing home this post that was originally posted over at Sew So Easy in her Seasonal Sewing Series.
The holidays are upon us, and if you’re like me, you’re getting pretty busy. I wanted something holiday-inspired and fun for Henry to do if I needed something for him to do. I decided to make him a felt gingerbread house that would help him practice his shapes and not have him eating oodles of candy like he would with a real gingerbread house.

Felt in multiple colors

Sturdy interfacing
White ricrac
1. Cut out and assemble pieces of candy. I stuck to circles, squares, and a rectangle. I wanted simple shapes for my son, but you can make whatever shapes you wan. I cut out stripes and sewed them onto each shape with a machine. Feel free to hand stitch if you love it (I don’t)!
2. Cut out the front and back of the house and two rectangles for the sides. My sides go up and become the roof also. Cut out pieces of interfacing in the same shapes and interface each piece.
3. Place the finished candy on the house pieces and trace the shapes.
4. Add any decorative lines you want.

5. Sew ricrac onto all the drawn lines. It is a little tricky to do corners, but the ricrac has some give to play with.
6. Assemble the house. The interfacing should make the house sturdy enough to stand on its own. Trim corners if needed.

Turn the house right side out and let your little ones enjoy it! My felt candy stick pretty well to my house, but I have gone back and added velcro to the candy and shapes on the house. It makes it a lot easier for Henry, and he doesn’t get frustrated. He loves the house, or as he says “douse.”

  1. Cute idea! I'm going to turn it into a tea cozy – my daughter has a rectangular teapot that will fit this perfectly.
